"Edward" is a traditional murder ballad existing in several variants. In English its versions were collected by Francis James Child as Child Ballad number 13. The Roud Folk Song Index number is 200.
This ballad may not be complete in itself. Large portions of the ballad are also found in the longer ballads "The Two Brothers" (Child 49) and "Lizzie Wan" (Child 51).
In the early 1960's when I was in high school "Edward", along with "Lord Randall" and "Barbara Allen" were often included in high school anthologies that included a chapter on British ballads. Following the example of Francis Child, they were presented with lyrics only. We had to discover the collections of Cecil Sharp and Bertrand Bronson to find the relevant melodies.
