"Guillô, pran ton tamborin", also known as "Pat a pan", is a Burgundian noel
with a dancing motif written by Bernard de La Monnoye (1648-1728).
It references the medieval dance combination of pipe and tabor. The tamborin
is a tabor drum with a long body and a single drumhead. The fleûte is a
three-hole fipple flute. The flute was played in one hand and the drum was
played with the other. The language is the Burgundian dialect, not French.
Both tune and text appear in Gui Barôzai’s Noei borguignon (1701). An accurate version appeared in William Sandy's Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (1833). Mannheim Steamroller did a good job in a modern interpretation on their Christmas in the Aire album. |
