John Jacob Niles claimed to have collected this carol in Murphy, Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1933, It was published in his Songs of the Hill Folk (1934). Some academics believe this song lacks characteristics of folk melodies, i.e.: it was possibly composed by Niles. It is included in The New Oxford Book of Carols (#172).
