"Fingall's Lamentation", also known as "Miss Guthrie's" is a Scottish air in
F Minor. The parts are played AABB.
Niel Gow stated that it was "a very old Gaelic air". Despite Gow's assertion that the tune was very old, scholars could find no earlier printed version than Gow's own. It is a typical example of the 'Celtic revival style' of Scottish fiddle composition of Gow's era. It was printed in Carlin's The Gow Collection (1986) and Gow's Fourth Collection of Niel Gow's Reels, 2nd ed. (1800). It was recorded by Abby Newton on Castles, Kirks and Caves (2001). |
