"The Gladstone", also known as "A.A. Gladstone", "Gladstane" or "Gladstone’s" is a Scottish reel in A Major. The parts are played AAB.
It was composed by James Scott Skinner (August 1843 – March 1927), a Scottish dancing master, fiddler and composer. He is considered to be one of the most influential fiddlers in Scottish traditional music and was known as "the Strathspey King". He is also the composer of "The Bonnie Lass of Bon Accord".
The melody was originally printed in Skinner’s Monikie Series No. 2, a publication that took its name from the town near Dundee in which Skinner lived until 1909, when his second wife left him. Skinner recorded "Gladstone" in 1910 in London with pianist Ethel Stuart.
It was also printed in Hunter's The Fiddle Music of Scotland (1988).
It was recorded by The Chieftains on Water from the Well and Altan on Horse with a Heart and Island Angel.
