"The Highland Watch" also known as "Now the 42nd Regt. or Royal Highlanders" is a
Scottish strathspey in E Minor. The parts are played AAB.
The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment is better-known as the Black Watch, first raised
in 1739 under John, the Earl of Crawford.
As "42nd Highland Regiment" the strathspey
was printed in William Bradbury Ryan's Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883)
in A minor which places part of the B part very high in the violin 3rd position.
It was printed in Dow's Collection of Ancient Scots Music (c. 1775),
Gow's Complete Repository, Part One (1799),
McKercher's A Collection of Original Strathspeys and Reels (1824),
O'Farrell's National Irish Music for the Union Pipes (1804).
