"Lord MacDonald", also known as "The Braes of Mar", "Johnny Will You Marry Me",
"Johnny Won't You Marry Me", "Sir Alex MacDonald's Reel" is a Scottish
strathspey or reel in D Major. The parts are played AB (Surenne) or
AABBCCDD (Athole, Gow, Skye).
Gow called it "Old Reel"(1806).
Surenne (1851) gives the alternate title "O Mither, Ont Bodie but the Duddy
Blacksmith" and says the version is an "old set".
It was printed in Carlin's The Gow Collection (1986),
Gow's Complete Repository, Part 3 (1806) (appears as "Loard McDonald"),
Kerr's Merry Melodies, vol. 4 (appears as "Lord MacDonald 'Old' Strathspey"),
MacDonald's The Skye Collection (1887),
Stewart-Robertson's The Athole Collection (1884) and
Surenne's Dance Music of Scotland (1852).
It was recorded by Donny LeBlanc on Rosining Up the Bow (1993).
