A popular and old English/Scottish country jig melody. There is a Shetland
reel known as "Da New Rigged Ship". “New Rigged Ship” has been more popular
in the United States in both 6/8 and reel-time settings of the melody, called
"Green Willis"
or
"The Raw Recruit".
It has been printed in Gow Strathspey Reels (1784), Gow, A Second Collection of Strathspey Reels, 2nd edition (1803) and Karpeles & Schofield A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951). It has been recorded by Altan, Aly Bain, Dave Swarbrick and others. I learned this one from print, I think from 1000 Fiddle Tunes. |
