"Da Scalloway Lasses", also known as "Fair Field House" is a Shetland reel in cut time and A dorian or A minor. The parts are played AABB (Brody, Cooke) or AA'BB' (Bain).
Scalloway (in Old Norse: Skálavágr) is the largest settlement on the North Atlantic coast of Mainland, the largest island of the Shetland Islands and was the former capitol of the islands.
In the early years of the 20th century the melody was played regularly for Foursome Reels and Highland Schottisches. The reel may well have been imported from Scotland since it is similar to "Fair Field House" which appears in John Riddell's A Collection of Scots Reels, Minuets, &c Composed by John Riddell published in Ayre (1st ed., c. 1766 and 2nd ed., c. 1782).
It was printed in Anderson & Georgeson's Da Mirrie Dancers (1970), Bain's 50 Fiddle Solos (1989), Brody's Fiddler’s Fake Book (1983) and Cooke's The Fiddle Tradition of the Shetland Isles (1986).
It was recorded by Boys of the Lough on Second Album (1974).
