The risque song "Bonnie Lassie-o" or "The Shearing's Nae for You" concerning
the rape and pregnancy of a girl uses the melody of
"Kelvin Grove".
This is a member of a large family of variants, with many variations in text. The tune has been used for many other pieces. This version is from Ross Sutter who learned it from Jean Redpath who learned it from Jeannie Robertson. It was recorded by Jeannie Robertson on Father Adam. The melody ("Kelvin Grove") was printed in G.H. Davidson's Davidson's Gems of Scottish Melody (c. 1830's), Howe's Second Part of the Musician's Companion (1843/1850), Howe's 1000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867), Kerr's Merry Melodies, vol. 3 (c. 1880's) and Manson's Hamilton's Universal Tune-Book, vol. 1 (1853). The melody has also been used for several hymns with lyrics by several composers. It appears in 41 hymnals. |
