"The Nutting Girl", also known as "Nutting Time" and "A-Nutting We
Will Go", "Jack the Jolly Ploughboy", "The Jolly Plowboy" or
"To Rodney We will go" is an English air or Morris dance tune in
4/4 or cut time and G Major. The parts are played AB, AC, AC
(Bampton), AABABABABA (Staton Harcourt), AABCBCB (Bampton & Fieldtown),
AABCBC (Barnes) or AAAABAAABCCCB (Ducklington).
It is an English folk song (in the Roud Folk Song Index as #509) and one of the most famous morris dance tunes, collected from the villages of Bampton, Ducklington, Fieldtown (Leafield, Oxfordshire), Rollo Woods (the 'C' part is a variation of the Bampton version) and Stanton Harcourt (Oxfordshire); all in England's Cotswolds. A version was collected by Samuel Bayard in Pennsylvania called "The Tune the Old Cow Died of". It was printed in Bacon's A Handbook of Morris Dances (1974), Barnes' English Country Dance Tunes, vol. 2 (2005), JEFDSS, 2nd Series, No. 2, Mallinson's Mally's Cotswold Morris Book, vol. 1 (1988) and Williamson's English, Welsh, Scotch and Irish Fiddle Tunes (1976). It was recorded by Ashley Hutchings on Morris On (1972) and Hutchings et al on Morris On (1983). |
