"The Princess Royal" is an English morris dance in G minor and 2/2 time (A and B parts) and
2/4 and 4/4 time (C part). The parts are played AA BC BC B.
The melody is very similar to "The Princess Royal" attributed to
Turlough O'Carolan by collector Edward Bunting. His tune is also known as "Miss MacDermott".
It was used by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the "Sea Songs" movement of his English Folk Song
Suite. The inclusion in the "Sea Songs" movement possibly meant that he confused it with
a song "The Bold Princess Royal" which is a ballad about a merchant ship encountering a
pirate ship.
This version comes from the village of Bampton which is southwest of Witney in Oxfordshire.
