"Complainer" is a shape note hymn. It was printed in three parts (treble/tenor/bass) until William Hauser's version in The Hesperian Harp (1848) and the revised Sacred Harp of 1911 where alto parts were added.
The lyrics are by an unknown author, first published in John Purify in A Selection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, in Two Parts (1826 and 1833) with eight stanzas. William Walker used only five and some versions of The Sacred Harp have only three.
It has been published in 15 hymnals. The oldest publications are:
