This melody is used for two folk-songs, "Van Dieman's Land". and "Young Henry the Poacher". It is also known as an "English tune". It was collected by Vaughan Williams at East Horndon, Essex on 23 April 1904 and at King's Lynn, Norfolk, on 9 Jan. 1905. He arranged it for Gilbert Keith Chesterton's 'O God of earth and altar' in 1906.
In the LBW #177-178 the tune is used for Horatio Bolton Nelson's 'By All Your Saints' which is used for various saint's days and lesser festivals. There are twenty verses. The first and third verses are always used. The one of the other eighteen verses appropriate to the current festival is used as the second verse.
