"Oh Mary Don't You Weep" also known as "Mary Don't You Weep" or "Oh Mary,
Don't You Weep, Don't You Mourn" is a Negro spiritual that originates
from before the Civil War making it what scholars call a "slave song".
The first recording of the song was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1915. It has been recorded by The Soul Stirrers, Burl Ives, Aretha Franklin, The Kingston Trio and many others. Pete Seeger gave it additional folk music visibility by performing it at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. |
