"The Barnyards of Delgaty", also known as "The Barnyards of Delgatie" is a Scottish air or
"Bothy Ballad" in A Major. The parts are played AB.
The ballad "Barnyards of Delgatie" refers to the home farm of Delgatie Castle, Turriff, an impressive house built by the Hays of Errol. The song is similar to the Irish "Rocks of Bawn" and the American "John Johanna", "Buffalo Skinners" and "Down on Penny's Farm" where a man is promised a good job, signs on for work and finds the conditions unbearable. It was printed in Hunter's Fiddle Music of Scotland (1988) and MacColl's Folk Songs and Ballads of Scotland (1965). It appears in the Roud Folksong Index as #2136. It was recorded by Ewan MacColl on Popular Scottish Songs (1962), The Clancy Brothers with Louis Killen on Live on St. Patrick's Day (1973) and a number of others. |
