"Crabs in the Skillet", in Gaelic "Portanide/Portáin Annsa Sgileid" is an Irish double jig or<br> air known on the coast of Clare and Limerick in G Dorian (most versions) or E Minor (Kennedy).<br> The parts are played AABBCC (O'Neill/Krassen) or AA'BB'CC' (Cole, Kennedy, O'Neill/1915, 1001 &<br> 1850, Ryan).<br> Petrie (1855) notes: "This tune belongs to the coast of Clare and Limerick". Howe directs: "A<br> little slower than jig time" indicating it was perhaps originally an air.<br> It was printed in Cobb's Cobb's Music of Ireland,<br> Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940),<br> Howe's 1,000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867),<br> Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs (1890),<br> Kennedy's Jigs & Quicksteps, Trips & Humours (1997),<br> O'Neill's O'Neill's Irish Music (1915),<br> O'Neill (Krassen) (1976),<br> O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903),<br> O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907),<br> Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) and<br> Stanford/Petrie's Complete Collection (1905).<br> It was recorded by Jordi Savall on The Celtic Viol.
