"Crooked Road to Dublin" also known as
"The Crooked Road", "The Duke of Leinster's Wife", "The Ladies' Pantalettes" or
"The Smiles and Tears of Erin" is an Irish reel in G Major. The parts are played
AB (Mitchell, Mulvihill), AAB (Harker/Rafferty) or AABB (Phillips).
"Crooked Road to Dublin" was recorded in New York by County Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman (1891–1945) c. 1924. Irish music collector and musicologist Brendan Breathnach printed the melody as "The Smiles and Tears of Erin" (Ceol Rince na hÉireann I). The tune was recorded in New York in November 1934 by the ‘Smiles and Tears of Erin’ Orchestra. This 78 record is perhaps the source of Breathnach’s title for this tune. It was printed in Harker's 300 Tunes from Mike Rafferty (2005), Mitchell's Dance Music of Willie Clancy (1993), Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986), Phillips' Fiddle Case Tunebook: British Isles (1989). It was recorded by Martin Hayes on Under the Moon (1995), Christy Moore on The Iron Behind the Velvet (1978) and Andy McGann & Paul Brady on It's A Hard Road To Travel (1977). |
