"Dunmore Lasses", in Gaelic "Gearrchailiú an Dúin Mhóir", also known as
"Dunmore Lassies", "Morrison's Reel" and "The Road to Knock" is an Irish
reel in E Minor. The parts are played AB (Breathnach) or AA'BB' (Flaherty).
This tune is similar to "My Love is in America".
This tune can be played in either a fast or slow tempo.
Fiddler Paddy Carty recorded the tune as "Morrison's," perhaps named for
flute player Tom Morrison (1889–1958) who recorded the tune on a 78 RPM in
New York in September, 1927 (in a medley with "Manchester Reel" and
"The Castlebar Traveler").
The name Dunmore means 'the big fort', from the Celtic dun mor.
It was printed in
Breathnach's Ceol: A Journal of Irish Music, vol. 5, no. 2 (1982),
Breathnach's The Man and His Music (1997) and
Ceol Rince na hÉireann I (1963) and
Flaherty's Trip to Sligo (1990).
It was recorded Tom Morrison & John Reynolds (1927) (78 RPM),
Touchstone on The New Land (1982),
The Chieftains on Bonaparte's Retreat (1976),
The Chieftains and Ry Cooder on The Long Black Veil (1995),
Mick Maloney on Strings Attached (1980),
Tom Morrison on From Galway to Dublin (1992. Reissue of 1927 original) and
Mary Bergin on Feadóga Stáin (1979).
