"Farewell to Erin", in Gaelic "Slán le hÉireann" is also known as "Austin Tierney's",
"The Cherry Tree", "Down with the Tea Tacklings", "Farewell to Ireland", "The Flying Column" or
"The Maid in the Cherry Tree" in an Irish reel in D Major or Mixolydian. The tune is circular and
the parts are played AB with no repeats of the parts.
In O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1850) the tune is printed with one sharp (although this may be a misprint) indicating the mixolydian mode. O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland (1001 Gems), has the melody in two sharps. It was printed in O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903), O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907) and Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940). |
