"The Galway Hornpipe", also known as "The Baldheaded Bachelor", "Dan Lowry's", "McDermott's Hornpipe",
"McDanaugh's Clog" or "McDonaugh's Clog" is an Irish hornpipe in D Major.
The parts are played AABB (Allan, Bain, Cranitch, Mallinson) or AABB' (Mulvihill).
"The Baldheaded Bachelor" is very similar to this tune but it is in G Major, not D Major.
The tune appears as the first two parts of a four-part hornpipe recorded under the title "McDermott's"
in New York in 1922 by County Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman.
The hornpipe has been absorbed into the contra dance and Cape Breton repertoires.
Coleman recorded the tune for OKeh records, an unusual issue for the company who specialized in jazz
and popular music (as well as early country music).
It was printed in Allan's Irish Fiddler,
Bain's 50 Fiddle Solos (1989),
Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983),
Cranitch's The Irish Fiddle Book (1996),
Mallinson's 100 Enduring (1995),
Miller & Perron's Irish Traditional Fiddle Music (1977, 2006),
Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986) and
Phillips' Fiddle Case Tunebook: British Isles (1989) (as "McDermott's Hornpipe").
It was recorded by Fennig's All Stars on The Hammered Dulcimer,
Cherish the Ladies on The Back Door (1992),
Jean Carignan on Jean Carignan Plays Coleman, Morrison, and Skinner and
Andy McGann and Paul Brady on It's A Hard Road to Travel.
