"Green Garters" (in Gaelic "Crioscosa Glais"), also known as "Geehan's Reel",
"The Grazier", "Trim the Velvet", "The Humours of Flip", "The Potlick" and "Sally
Kelly" is an Irish reel in D Major. The parts are played AB (O'Neill/1850 & 1001) or
AA'BB' (O'Neill/Krassen). Versions of the tune also appear in the key of G major
in several collections, including the Stephen Greir manuscript from County Leitrim.
Breathnach (1963) says "The Blacksmith’s Reel", also known as "The Blacksmith’s Daughter", is a version of this tune. It was printed in Banalari's Celtic Encyclopedia (1999), O'Neill (Krassen) (1976), O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903) and O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907). It was recorded by Brian McNamara on Fort of the Jewels (2004), The Chieftains on The Chieftains and James Keane on That's the Spirit. |
