"The Hut In The Bog", in Gaelic "An Bothán sa bPortach", also known as
"Hunt in the Bog", "The Cashmere Shawl" or "On the Road to Lurgan" is an
Irish reel in A Dorian.
The parts are played AB or AABB. The Traditional Tune Archive website has a
version with a C part but the first two measures are simply repeated twice
with the final two measures of the B part are tacked on. O'Neill's
"The Cashmere Shawl" has these first and third parts of this tune.
I have used only the A and B parts.
The banjo tab is by John Letscher from the playing of Lynn "Chirps" Smith
who played lead fiddle in the Volo Bogtrotters string band.
John notes:
Note that measures 10, 12, and 14 are different.
There can be a great temptation to play them the same way.
It was printed in Breathnach's CRÉ I (1963).
It was recorded by Topic Belhavel Trio on Irish Dance Music (1995),
Paddy Killoran on Milestone at the Garden. Irish Fiddle Masters from the
78 RPM Era (1949),
John Vesey on Sligo Fiddler (1954),
Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh on The Nervous Man - Traditional Irish Music on
Concertina (2000),
Paddy Canny on Traditional Music from the Legendary East Clare Fiddler (1997)
and many others.
