"I Know Where I'm Going" is a traditional Irish (or Scottish) ballad about a wealthy love-struck young woman pining for her "bonnie" lover Johnny who some say has a bad reputation. It has been known since the early nineteenth century. It is in the Roud Folk Song Index as #5701. It was printed in Colum's Broad-Sheet Ballads, Kane's Songs & Sayings of an Ulster Childhood (1983), Soodlum's Irish ballad Book, (1982), Walton's New Treasury of Irish Songs & Ballads 2 (1966) and Walton's 132 Best Irish Songs & Ballads (c1950). It was recorded by Burl Ives on Okeh Presents the Wayfaring Stranger, Kathleen Ferrier, Odetta, The Weavers, The Clancy Brothers, Judy Collins, Barbara Dane, The Highwaymen, The New Christy Minstrels, Harry Belafonte, Carolyn Hester, Laura Wright, Pete Seeger and others.
