"The Irish Maid", also known as "As I Roved Out One Morning", "The Irish Girl" or
"As I Walked Out" is an Irish air in 4/4 time and A Major.
This melody is used for many folksongs in the English speaking world and versions have been collected in Canada, America and Australia. Cazden (1982) notes that several lumbercamp songs were sung to it, including "Peter Emberley", some versions of "The Jam on Gerry's Rocks", "The Farmer's Son and the Shanty Boy" and his Catskill Mountain (New York) collected "Adieu to Prince Edward's Isle". It is included in the Roud Folk Song Index as #308 and #6319. It was recorded by Bob Copper on A Song for Every Season ("As I Walked Out") (1971), and on Coppersongs 2 ("The Irish Girl") (1995), Louis Killen on Old Songs, Old Friends ("The Lovely Irish Maid") (1997) the Young Coppers on Passing Out (2008) and Howard Bursen on Cider in the Kitchen (1980). |
