"Jackson's Reel 1", also known as "Jackson's Favourite", "Jackson's No. 1", "Johnson's Reel" is an Irish reel in E Dorian. The parts are played AAB (Taylor) or AABB' (Brody, Mulvihill). David Taylor (1992) suggests this tune also may have been composed by the 18th century Uilleann piper Walter "Piper" Jackson, however, there have been many tunes with the name Jackson in the title that have been rather routinely attributed to the historical piper, with little or no evidence. The tune was popularized by County Sligo/New York fiddler Michael Coleman, who recorded it as the first tune in his medley "Jackson's Reels". Some sources consider this to be a version of "Ships Are Sailing". It was printed in Breathnach's Ceol Rince na hÉireann 1 (1965), Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983), Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986) and Taylor's Crossroads Dance (1992). It was recorded by Brian Conway on Consider the Source (2008), Jean Carignan on Jean Carignan (first tune of "Jackson's Medley"), Michael Coleman on The Legacy of Michael Coleman (first tune of "Jackson's Medley" first recorded in 1925 for Columbia), Kathleen Collins on Kathleen Collins (2008) and Shaskeen on The Mouse Behind the Dresser (1990).
