"King of the Pipers" (Gaelic: "Rig na Piobairide" or "Rí na bPíobairí"), also known as “The Farting Badger”, “The Kilraine Jig” and “McSweeney’s Jig” is an Irish double jig in D Major/Mixolydian. O’Neill thought it “quite probable” that the melody had originally been a clan march. “King of the Pipers” is a common tune in County Donegal, where two different versions are played. “The Farting Badger” title was specific to the Teelin region of County Donegal (which was known for good fiddlers in the 1920-30s). “McSweeney's Jig” is named for the famous Donegal uilleann piper and fiddler Tarlach McSweeney. Some fiddlers play it with drone harmony imitating the pipes. It was printed in O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903) and a number of more recent collections of fiddle tunes. It was recorded by Seán Keane, Mick Moloney, Tommy Peoples and others I learned it from Mick Moloney's album with Eugene O'Donnell.
