"The Magic Slipper", also known as "Dan Galbey's", "Donegal Boys", "I Wish I Never Saw
You", "Maude Millar", "The Montua", "Morrison's Reel", "Mrs. Smullen's", "My Love is
Fair and Handsome" or "Paddy McFadden's" is an Irish reel in 2/4 time and G Major.
The parts are played AABB.
While both of the printed sources give the tune in 1/16th notes and 2/4 time, I have set it in 1/8th notes and 4/4 time for ease of reading. The tune is a member of a fairly large tune family whose most prominent member is the reel "Maude Millar" which was printed in O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland (1907) and recorded in the 78 RPM era by Sligo fiddler James "The Professor" Morrison. The late 19th century Alex Sutherland manuscript has the tune although it is titled as "The Magic Spider". The first strain is similar to the second strain of the American breakdown "Katy Hill". It was printed in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) and Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940). |
