"The Men from Mallow", is an Irish hornpipe in D Major. The parts are played AAB.
O'Neill listed himself as the source for the setting in his 1903 Music of Ireland collection. This sometimes indicates a tune he picked up from an older collection but no such source has been identified. Mallow is a town in County Cork, Ireland, north of Cork city. The earliest form of the name is Magh nAla, meaning "plain of the stone". Evidence of pre-historic settlement is found in Beenalaght south-west of Mallow where an alignment of six standing stones lie on a hill to the west. The tune was printed in O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903) and Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907). |
