"Ned of the Hill", in Gaelic "Eadmun an cnuic" is also known as "As A Beam O’er The<br> Waters", "Col O’Gara" and "The Young Man’s Dream".<br> It is an Irish ballad of the period 1698-1704 written in memory of<br> Éamonn Ó Riain, of Knockmeill Castle, Co. Tipperary, who was<br> an outlaw under King William. <br> It is said that Ó Riain became an outlaw after shooting a tax collector<br> dead during a quarrel over the confiscation of a poor woman's cow. <br> Various other stories are told in which Ó Riain plays the role of the<br> rebel hero who battles authority in the mode of Robin Hood.<br> There are several sets of lyrics in both Gaelic and English<br> but I only play the melody instrumentally.<br> It has been recorded by The Tannahill Weavers, Finbar And<br> Eddie Furey and Boys Of The Lough.<br> I learned this from one of John Loesburg's An Irish Tunebook<br> collections.<br> <br> <br>
