"The Old Hag in the Kiln", also known as "The Hag in the Kiln" or "Dinny Delaney's" is an
Irish single jig in D Mixolydian. The parts are played AABBCCDD.
A hag is a wizened old woman or a kind of fairy or goddess having the appearance of such a woman, often found in folklore. This tune is probably too modern to be connected to the ancient mythological hags of Gaelic traditions. In these traditions, a hag (in Gaelic cailleach) is a fairy or goddess concerned with creation, harvest, the weather and sovereignty. In several folktales the sovereignty of the land is given to the man who will sleep with the hag after granting her wishes. For more on this see the notes to the ballad of "King Henry". This tune was printed in Harker's 300 Tunes from Mike Rafferty (2005). It was recorded by The Bothy Band on Old Hag You Have Killed Me (1981), Mike & Mary Rafferty on The Dangerous Reel (1996), Sean Keane on Gusty’s Frolicks, The Chieftains on The Chieftains 8 and Callanish on The Hare’s Paw. |
