"Paddy on the Turnpike" is part of a large
and varied tune family whose members go by numerous titles with settings
in various modes, from major (ionian) to dorian as well as mixed modes.
Other members of the family include
"The Bunch of Keys", "The Flowers of Limerick" and "The Ewe (or Ewie) with the Crooked Horn".
The tune is also known as
"Half Past Four", "Indian Nation", "Jenny on the Railroad", "The Mills are Grinding",
"Old Town Reel", "Paddy on the Handcar", "Paddy on the Handlecar", "Pigeon on the Gatepost",
"Reel de la bombarde", "Reel du plombier" or "Telephone Reel".
It is an Irish, Scottish, Canadian and American old-time reel in G Major/Mixolydian,
G Mixolydian/Dorian (Bégin, Perlman), G Minor/Dorian (Brody, Cole, Howe, Miller & Perron,
Winner), A Dorian (Bayard), A Minor (Kennedy & Raven) or A Major or A Mixolydian (Silverberg,
Thede).
It is played in standard or AEae fiddle tuning. The parts are played AABB (most versions),
AA'BB (Phillips) or AA’BB’ (Perlman).
I first learned this from the Electra Records Old Time Banjo Project.
The banjo tab is my approximation of a version playing the B part up the neck.
It was printed in Bayard's Hill Country Tunes (1944),
Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981),
