"The Providence Reel", also known as "The Providence, "The Rossport Reel" or "Cooney's
Reel" is an Irish reel in D Major. The parts are played AABB (Cranitch, Mallinson,
Miller & Perron), or AA'BB' (Alewine).
It is a distinctive tune in D major that begins, however, with an emphatic E (suggesting an A major chord). It's an odd tune. It gives a feeling that the E should be a pick-up note instead of starting the tune on beat one. The “Providence Reel” title honors Providence, Rhode Island. The alternative title, "The Rossport Reel" is a nod to Rossport, Co. Mayo, Ireland. It was printed in Alewine's Maid that Cut Off the Chicken's Lips (1987), Bulmer & Sharpley's Music from Ireland, vol. 2 (1976), Cranitch's The Irish Fiddle Book (1996), Mallinson's 100 Essential (1995), Miller & Perron's Irish Traditional Fiddle Music (1977/2006), Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986) and Treoir, vol. 38, No. 3 & 4 (2006). It was recorded by Mick Conneely on Selkie (2001), Fred Finn on The Coleman Archive, vol. 2: The Home Place (2005), Matt Molloy & Sean Keane on Contentment is Wealth (1985), Paddy Reynolds on Atlantic Wave (2003) and Matt Cranitch on Take a Bow (1988). |
