"Rakes of Kildare", in Gaelic "Racairi Ua Cill-Dara" is an Irish double jig in G major.
The word "Rakes" in the title appears to be short for "rakehell", which itself stems from the Old Icelandic word "reikall", meaning "wandering” or "unsettled". Popularly "rakes" referred to "stylish and spirited" young men of loose moral character. The name Kildare means ‘Church of the Oaks’.
This is possibly related to the song "The Limerick Rake".
