"The Rambling Rake", in Gaelic "An Rácaire Fánach" is an Irish long or set dance in cut time and A Minor (Roche) or A Dorian (Mulvihill, O'Neill). The parts are played AAB (O'Neill/1850 & 1001) or AABB (Mulvihill, O 'Neill/Krassen, Roche).
There are eight measures in the A part and sixteen measures in the B part.
There are some similarities to "King of the Fairies" and the related Shetland variant "Scollay's Reel".
A slightly different version in E minor appears in O'Neill's Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody (1922).
It was printed in Cotter's Traditional Irish Tin Whistle Tutor (1989), Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986), Krassen's O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1976), O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903), O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907) and Roche's Collection of Traditional Irish Music, vol. 3 (1927).
It was recorded by Paddy O’Brien, Seamus Connolly and Charlie Lennon on The Banks Of The Shannon (1990) and Larry McKee And The Shandonairs on Irish Dancer (1970).
