"Swinging on a Gate", in Gaelic "Ag Luascadh ar an nGeata"
is an Irish reel that has become very popular at New England contra dances.
The tune’s origins are obscure, however, it appears to have been composed
in comparatively modern times. A creditable rumor has it that it came out
of the New York Irish traditional music community sometime in the mid-20th century.
This has been recorded by Martin Mulvihill and others. It was printed in Mulvihill's First Collection of Traditional Irish Music. This is usually played as a reel but I like a dotted hornpipe rhythm. I learned it at our Monday night jam. |
