"Back up and Push (1)" is a Canadian reel in D Major. The parts are played AABB.
It is attributed to Kirkton, Ontario, fiddler Ward Allen (1924-1965), who won contest after
contest in the 1950's and who carved out a successful career for himself as a radio
fiddler and recording artist. Allen played with Montana Slim, Wilf Carter ("the father of
Canadian country music"), appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and had a radio show on Frank
Ryan's station CFRA in Ottawa, Canada.
The tune was recorded by Allen as the 'A' side of a 1956 recording for Sparton Records,
with his own composition
"Maple Sugar"
on the 'B' side.
This tune is not related to
"Back up and Push (2)"
which was recorded by the Skillet Licker
spin-off group The Georgia Organ Grinders in 1929.
It was recorded by Graham Townsend on Le Violon / The Fiddle (1975).
