"Fiddle Head Reel" is a New England reel in D Major (Brody) or G Major (Sweet).
The parts are played AABB.
It was composed by Canadian fiddler Jim Magill (1905–1954), who was born either in Northern Ireland (in 1902) or in Montreal (1905). He was a contemporary of fiddler Don Messer and was centered in Toronto, where he often played on radio with his group The Northern Ramblers. I learned it from Fennigs All Stars. It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983), Jarman's Jim Magill's Square Dance Tunes (1952) (as "Fiddle Heads"), Sweet's Fifer's Delight (1964/1981). It was recorded by Fennigs All Stars on The Hammered Dulcimer, Rudy Meeks on Heritage Fiddle (1976) and Bob Carlin on Melodic Clawhammer Banjo. |
