"Snake River Reel" is an American reel in D Major and D Mixolydian.
It was composed by musician and dance caller Peter Lippincott (formerly of St. Louis, subsequently of Arkansas) in 1985. He plays guitar and mandolin as well as other stringed instruments. Peter was accorded the title of Arkansas Living Treasure, 2010. His clay work is noted for his very thin throwing and amazing glazes. He teaches pottery classes for adults and children in his studio.
The Snake River runs from Yellowstone National Park, through southern Idaho to join the Columbia River in Washington state.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher who learned it from the playing of Chirps Smith.
It was printed in Silberberg's The Complete Fiddle Tunes I Either Did or Did Not Learn at the Tractor Tavern (2007) and Levenson's Buzzard Banjo – Clawhammer Style (2000).
It was recorded by ILL-MO Boys on Fine as Frog Hair (1992), The Boiled Buzzards on Early Bird Special (1994) and Chirps Smith on Home Recordings Vol 4.
