"Spring in the Valley" is an American reel in cut or 4/4 time and D Major.
The parts are played AABB.
It was composed in the 1970's by fiddler Tom McCreesh, who played with
the Hotmud (or Hot Mud) Family for several years. The band's leaders, Dave and Suzanne
Edmundson, resided in Spring Valley, Ohio and McCreesh's title may be a
word-play on the town they lived in.
Tom McCreesh also played fiddle with Fennig’s All-Star String Band.
Some people play this with the parts reversed, B first and then the A part.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher who picked it up at the Gettysburg jam.
It was printed in Stacy Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 1 (1994) and
Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021).
It was recorded by Fennig's All-Star String Band on The Hammered Dulcimer Strikes
Again (1977),
Michael, McCreesh & Campbell on Dance Like a Wave on the Sea (1978) and
New Bad Habits on Shades of Death Creek (2013).
Clare Milliner and Walt Koken do a nice double fiddle version on YouTube
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_fl4eHSyPc).
