"The Year of Jubilo", also known as "Kingdom Coming", is an abolitionist Civil War song, written and composed by Henry C. Work in 1862, prior to the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The word "contraband" in the line "I spec' he try an' fool dem Yankees for to tink he's contraband" is the term commonly used in the Union soldiers during the Civil War to describe a new status for certain escaped slaves or those who affiliated with Union forces. The Army (and the Congress) determined that the US would not return escaped slaves who went to Union lines and classified them as "contraband".
