Notes to Legacy Tunes


The legacy songs and tunes in this section are my selections from various sources. They appear here because, while they are all constructed in the form of traditional music, they are all composed pieces. Some are quite old and can be traced back to the 18th century or before.
Despite the origins of these pieces, most people learn them by ear from recordings and assume them to be traditional.
Some of these songs come from the minstrel tradition of the mid and late 19th century and some come from the early years of country music from performances by such early country stars as The Carter Family, Charlie Poole and Uncle Dave Macon.
