"Planxty Drew", in Gaelic "Pleraca Dreu" is an Irish air or Planxty in
6/8 time and G Dorian or E Dorian. The parts are played AB or AABB.
It was composed by O'Carolan, presumably for one of the Drews of Drewstown House, Co. Meath, which is three miles north of Athboy and close to the Westmeath border. The founder of the family in Ireland was Francis Drew, who went there as a Captain in the Army of Queen Elizabeth I in 1598. It was printed Complete Collection of Carolan's Irish Tunes (1985), Krassen's O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1976), O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903), O'Sullivan's Carolan: The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper (1958) and Stanford/Petrie's Complete Collection (1905). It was recorded by Shelley Phillips on Celtic Treasure -The Legacy Of Turlough O’Carolan (1996) and Johnny Cunningham on Fair Warning (1985). |
