"Bachelor's Hall" is the name of several songs from various sources in England, Scotland and America. It is usually an air in 6/8 time. The song appears in David Sime's Edinburgh Musical Miscellany (1793) and in other, later, period songsters, such as the American Musical Miscellany (1798) and Jovial Songster (1805). This version comes from the Ritchie family in Kentucky. The verses about failing love are related to the family of songs that include "The Wagoner's Lad" "On Top of Old Smokey" "The Water is Wide" "The Butcher's Boy. Steeleye Span recorded their own version on All Around My Hat (1975). A version was printed in Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 5 (1797). It appears in the Roud Folk Song Index as #385. This version was printed in Jean Ritchie's The Dulcimer Book (1963).
