"Careless Love" was one of the best known pieces in the repertory of the Buddy Bolden band in New Orleans, Louisiana at the start of the 20th century and it has remained a jazz and blues standard since then. Hundreds of recordings have been made in folk, blues, jazz, country, and pop styles; some of the more notable versions include those by Bessie Smith, Pete Seeger, Big Joe Turner, T. Texas Tyler, Fats Domino, Eddy Arnold, Louis Armstrong, Eartha Kitt, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Dave Van Ronk, Lead Belly, Odetta, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Ray Charles, Dr. John, Madeleine Peyroux, Bob Dylan, Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash, Frankie Laine, Skip James and many more.
It was printed in Lomax's Best Loved American Folk Songs and Folk Songs of North America.
I learned it from Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk.
