"The Deaf Woman's Courtship" is an American dialog song that was collected from Mrs. Emma Early at Clinchfield, N. C. on September 9, 1918. It was originally a dialog between a man and a woman.
While Sharp's book contains 27 songs in a section titled "Nursery Songs", this song is not among them. It is included in the general "Songs" section. More recently, it has become known as a children's song and the words have been changed.
It was printed in Sharp's English Folk-Songs from the Southern Appalachians (1932) and Thomas' Girls Scout Pocket Songbook (1956).
It was recorded by Paul Clayton, Jean Ritchie & Richard Chase on American Folk Tales and Songs.
