Lyrics:
Chorus:
I got a pig at home in a pen;
Corn to feed him on,
All I need's a pretty little girl
To feed 'Em when I'm gone.
Goin' on the mountain
To sow a little cane
Raise a barrel of Sorghum
To sweeten ol' Liza Jane.
Chorus
Yonder comes that gal of mine.
How do you think I know?
I know by that gingham gown
Hanging down so low.
Chorus
Black cloud's arisin',
Surely a sign of rain.
Get your gray bonnet on
Little Liza Jane.
Chorus
Bake them biscuits, lady,
Bake 'em good n' brown.
When you get them biscuits baked
We're Alabamy bound.
Chorus
"Pig in a Pen", also known as "Pig in the Pen" or "Pig at Home in a Pen" is an
old-time and Bluegrass breakdown & song. A popular piece in bluegrass tradition,
it started as an old-time piece. Tennessee’s Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith claimed to have
composed it and did play it frequently on the radio, but some believe some of the
verses predate Smith. The chorus is very similar to "Shady Grove".
It was first recorded (as "Pig at Home in the Pen") in February, 1937, in Charlotte,
North Carolina, by Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith accompanied by Alton & Rabon Delmore
(recording as "The Arthur Smith Trio").
It was also recorded by The Camp Creek Boys, EarnestEast & the Pine Ridge Boys,
Spud Gravely [1960ca] (Pig in a Pen), Smiley Hobbs on American Banjo - Tunes and Songs
in Scruggs Style (Pig in a Pen), Old and in the Way (with Jerry Garcia),
George Pegram, Bruce Molsky and a number of Bluegrass bands.
It was printed in Ford's Traditional Music in America (1940/1965),
Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes (1994),
Brody's Banjo Picker's Fakebook (1985), Brody's Fiddler’s Fakebook (1983) and
Thede's The Fiddle Book (1967).
