The definitive version of "Sugar Hill" was created by Tommy Jarrell and Kyle Kreed.
Recorded by the New Lost City Ramblers who got it from an old recording
of a singer named Dad Crocket on Brunswick Records called "Mountain Frolic".
They compare it to "Jinny Git Round" that was recorded by Jean Ritchie.
The term "sugar hill" is sometimes used in songs by some black singers to
refer to the "wild part of town".
This should play easily on the banjo in G tuning (gDGBD). One of these days I'll get around to tabbing it out. |
