"Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier", also known as "Buttermilk Hill" is an English folk song. It was popular throughout the American Revolutionary War. The tune and lyrics are very similar to the 17th century Irish tune "Siúil A Rún" which dates back to the 17th Century.
It was recorded by Pete Seeger on American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 4 and James Taylor and Mark O'Connor on Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology (2001).
Peter, Paul, and Mary used the first and third verses of the song in "Gone the Rainbow" on Moving (1963).
It was printed in John and Alan Lomax's Best Loved American Folk Songs.
There are several literary references to the Irish version (sometimes known as "Shule Aroon"). Robert Louis Stevenson refers to the song twice in his novel The Master of Ballantrae (1889). In Ulysses (1922), James Joyce had Stephen Dedalus sing the song to Leopold Bloom.
