"Lord Bateman", also known as "Young Beichan" is a ballad, which was collected by Francis James Child in the late 19th century and is included in the Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads as number 53. It is included in the Roud Index as #40. It is also known in Norse, Spanish, and Italian variants.
It has been recorded by Jean Ritchie on British Traditional Ballads in the Southern Mountains - Child Ballads, Vol 1 (1961), Ewan MacColl on The English and Scottish Popular Ballads (Child Ballads) - Vol. 2 (1964) (as "Young Beichan"), Peter Bellamy on The Fox Jumped Over The Parson's Gate (1969), The New Lost City Ramblers on Remembrance of Things to Come (1966), The New Golden Ring on Five Days Singing, Vol 1 (1996) and others.
This tune is the one usually used for "The Lady of Carlisle" and is the one used by The Golden Ring singers.
